A visit to the Chilean
Patagonia is an unforgettable experience. Not only is it the southern
most part of the planet, but the natural setting is one of the world's
most extreme and impressive. A spectacular land of glaciers and
icy peaks, southern Patagonia feels like no where else on planet
earth. This is Chile’s most popular destination for visitors.
A beautiful and unspoilt wilderness region with landscapes ranging
from heavily forested mountains to wild and windswept peninsulas
and breathtaking glaciers. Patagonia is sure to fascinate visitors
with a sense of adventure and a love of the outdoors, which can
lose and immerse themselves amount its vast open spaces.
The highlight of any visit is the Torres
del Paine National Park. The “towers”, 3 impressive
and distinctive columns after which the park is named, point vertically
upwards to the sky, surrounded by imposing glaciers, turquoise lakes
and thick forests of native trees.
Punta
Arenas
The European-style city of Punta Arenas
is the southernmost city in Chile and the gateway to Patagonia with
a lively community, because further south there are only small towns.
In this city the sun rises from the sea and sets on the mountains,
a distinctive feature because in Santiago it happens the other way
round. Originally named “Sandy Point” by the English,
it adopted Hispanic equivalent under Chilean colonisation.
A centre for local sheep farming and fishing industries along with
an important military base, Punta Arenas is also the home of La
Polar, one of the most southerly breweries the world. Although the
city has expanded rapidly in recent years, it still remains a tranquil
and pleasant city. The climate and architecture give Punta Arenas
a distinctively northern European tone, very different from anywhere
else in Chile.
There are plenty of attractions to visit within what is usually
known as Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego (Fire Land). After observing
mountains and glaciers that move into the ocean, the expedition
continues to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, to travel
around it and visit its National Parks. Ground excursions to glaciers,
islands, sea lion and penguin colonies, will be offered daily. Other nearby attractions
nearby include the Balmeceda and Serrano glaciers, accessed by boat
trip from Puerto Natales; located 257 km north from Punta Arenas.
Puerto Natales is accessed from Punta Arenas by a paved road heading
north though forests of southern beech and prime pastureland. Puerto
Natales lies between Cerro Dorotea (which rises behind the town)
and the eastern shore of the Seno Ultima (Last Hope Sound), over
which there are fine views (weather permitting) to the Peninsula
Antonio Varas. Previously prosperity of this Patagonian town relied
upon employment in the coal mines of Rio Turbio, Argentina but today,
tourism is one of its most important industries.
Ushuaia
is the southernmost city in the world and the main port of the Southern
Argentinean Patagonia. There is a lot to visit around the city,
besides the natural attractions that have made this place famous.
Mare Australis, the ship from Cruceros Australis, will sail through
the Patagonian Channels and around Tierra del Fuego. Ground excursions
to glaciers, islands, sea lion and penguin colonies, will be offered
daily. Also we will sail through the mythical Cabo de Hornos (Cape
Horn), well known all around the globe.
Puerto Natales Gateway
to Torres del Paine Puerto Natales is the
port for ferries sailing the Patagonian channels from Puerto
Montt. In addition to its role of
the gateway to Torres del Paine and to the spectacular Balmaceda
glacier, it is also the gateway to Argentina's Los
Glaciares National Park, right across the border, with the town
of Calafate as the service town and the Perito Moreno glacier as
its main highlight.
In Puerto Natales we can offer personalised transfers to/from the
bus station to your hotel as well as full day excursions to Torres
del Paine National Park and the Balmeceda and Serrano Glaciers by
boat.
