Crooked Inlet Farm, once called Roy Cove, is about as far West as
you can go on West Falklands. The farm runs 3,000 Corriedale sheep
and 65 cattle and is now certified as organic. All sheep work is still
done traditionally on horseback using the six sheep dogs owned by
the family. The settlement itself is pretty, with the traditional
mix of old houses painted in different colours nestling amongst gorse
bushes.
This destination offers one of the few opportunities for horse trekking
in the Falklands, and whether you are an experienced jockey or just
a beginner there is a horse for you at Crooked Inlet. The tack used
is traditional “guacho” style – with a sheep skin
cover over the saddle. This is extremely comfortable and takes no
time at all to get use to. Your hosts is a talented horseman, much
respected in the Falklands for his horse taming and riding skills.
Fishing for
Falklands trout on Herbert Stream is another activity available
to visitors. Once you got your catch why not cook it up on a barbecue
beside the river to round off a perfect day.
There is a very modern 4x4 vehicle for hire
to allow the visitor to venture further afield. With the new road
network linking the likes of Port Howard, Chartres, Fox Bay and
Hill Cove to Roy Cove this a great place from which to explore West
Falkland.
The recently modernised self-catering cottage at Roy Cove stands
at the end of the creek, commanding glorious views out the islands
in the harbour.
