West Lagoons Farm is part of the original large farm of
Hill Cove, which was founded in 1868 and sold for sub-division in
1987. This sheep farm, covering over 17,000 acres of unspoilt wide-open
rugged landscape. The main income is from sheep farming for wool
production. It is possible to participate in the farm work at certain
times of the year - stock work such as gathering and shearing, repairing
fences and helping to maintain the buildings may all be on the agenda,
either for you to watch or assist with. For the really adventurous,
a trip to nearby Shallow Bay Farm for horse riding may be tempting.
Alternatively you may wish to explore at
your own leisure and the area has plenty to offer visitors including
sea and freshwater fishing, bird watching, walking and beachcombing.
Vehicle hire is available for you to venture out on your own and
explore West Falkland.
For wildlife
enthusiasts to get their fix it is possible to take a trip to the
Gentoo penguin colony at Port North, and the West Lagoons fresh
water reed pond is home to Black-necked swans, Silvery grebes and
Crested night herons. Further afield a visit to Dunbar and Grave
Cove gives access to Black-browed albatross, Gentoo and Rockhopper
penguins. Excursions can also be taken to Dunnose Head where you
can try your hand at dying, spinning or felting some Falklands wool.
Hill Cove settlement is also home to the largest mature 'forest'
in the Falkland Islands.
This is a great destination to get a real idea of what farming and
“camp” life is like in the Falklands or simply chill
out with the simple things in life.
